Nope. No beach, yet. I am 30 kilometers from Bangpoo, the nearest beach. Without a car, distances are much further here. My plan is to do my sightseeing after I get back from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I should be well acclimated to Thailand by then. This is the hot, non-tourist season. It gets to about 100 every day with a heat index of about 115. Being in the sun during the day is brutal.
What I would like to do is go to Pattaya, which is about 144 km away. After spending a day at the beach, I would like to take the new ferry across the Gulf of Thailand to Hua Hin, which is about a 113 km ride. Then, I could spend a night there and take a train back home, about 199 km. Alternately, while I am in Pattaya, I could take a ferry out to one of the big islands out there - sort of like Catalina Island - but cheaper.
I also hope to spend a day at Kanchunburi to see the Bridge on the River Kwai. Another fun trip would be to Chiang Mai. It is the northern hub of Thailand about 12 hours away by train. I would like to go up during the day, stay a couple of nights there, and then take the overnight sleeper train back home.
Wow, sounds like a lot of fun. Take lots of pictures and do everything you can. You never know when you will be back this way and you don't want to miss anything.
