Hair Today, Gone . . . Today

Oh, no! A runaway skytrain is headed for the BTS station and will arrive in 11 minutes. People are fleeing the boarding area in panic.

Meanwhile, down in the turnstile level, mild mannered Mike silently slips into a 10 minute haircut booth. With only 1 minute left before disaster occurs, out steps . . .

BALD MAN to save the day!

Most booths here are open air, although a couple of financial booths like bank or money changing are also indoor and air conditioned booths. The barber thought my haircut was so unusual that she took selfies of us to prove that a crazy American really did get buzzed there. The haircut is 120 Baht ($3.60) and the air conditioning is a nice break when walking around.

  1. No bald people in Thailand? With it humid, I thought that would be more common? Hey, I emailed you. Hurry back an answer when you can.

  2. E-Gads ! Even though I am retired, I hit rush hour yesterday. I was at a light that turned green and it turned red even before I got to the front. Then, on the highway, I had to slow down to almost 40 mph for over an ENTIRE minute !!! What? Oh the horror !!! I'm getting flashbacks of Califirnia. There are just too many people here. Time to hit the wilderness... ;-)

I have only seen a couple of people with Buzz cuts. And, they have been foreigners. You have to remember that this is the East. In America and Europe, we are the West. We are based on the Judeo-Christian model where, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free." We can get a buzz cut if we think it is comfortable.

The East is based on "Face." They have little understanding of truth. Moral correctness involves recognizing the correct pecking order and acting appropriately. Therefore, one strives to gain the most face and not lose face. Conformity is sought after so as not to lose face. The higher social standing one has, the more respect you deserve. Whether you do right or wrong (in our sense) is not that important.

The odd thing is that the West is considered the ideal. Also, white is considered best. You cannot buy bath soap or skin lotion here without whitening agents. Maybe I will start a buzz cut trend.
