Walking And Talking

I subscribe to a site that sends me a quote from C. S. Lewis every day. Yesterday's was a good one:

"Walking and talking are two very great pleasures, but it is a mistake to combine them. Our own noise blots out the sounds and silences of the outdoor world."

I guess this would also pertain to earphones, although, I think jogging is in a different category than walking. There, earphones would be appropriate, if desired.

  1. Ya, I really enjoy just listening to the wind blow through the trees and the far away birds when I am hiking. A music in it's own. Of course, mostly now I just hear myself huffing and puffing as I struggle to hike lol..... Not as nice a music. Lee told me about a meetup.com site. It's just local groups that do things together. One is a hiking and adventure group. They only take small 3-5 mile hikes, but hey, anything is better then nothing. This summer I plan on going with friends on a 10 day hike around Mount Rainier in Washington, so need to get in long-distance walking shape.

  2. Oh PS: For Christmas I bought Josh earphones. but they are not earphones because they do not go inside your ear. Instead they rest on the bone outside your ear. Remember he has that 80% hearing loss in one ear and it is closed up. But for the rest of us, we can listen to music and listen to the sounds around us :-). But then again, that defeats the purpose again of listening to nature.
